We at Anouk Jewelry believe that your engagement ring is more than a piece of jewelry. It becomes part of your daily life, accompanying you through celebrations, milestones, adventures, and ordinary moments alike. With proper engagement ring care and regular maintenance, it can remain beautiful for generations to come and one day become part of your family’s heirloom.
Cleaning Your Jewelry
One of the simplest ways to care for your engagement ring is through regular cleaning. Over time, lotions, sunscreen, soap residue, and natural oils from the skin can build up on both the metal and gemstones. This layer of residue can dull the appearance of your ring and reduce its sparkle.
This is especially noticeable with coloured gemstones such as sapphires. Many people are surprised to discover that a sapphire that once appeared bright, vibrant, and full of lustre can gradually start to look darker or murkier. The buildup of oils and residue simply prevents light from passing through the gem as beautifully as it should. A thorough cleaning can often restore the brightness, colour, and sparkle you fell in love with when you first chose the ring.
We recommend regularly cleaning your engagement rings and jewelry by soaking them in warm water with a few drops of mild dish soap for 15-20 minutes. Then gently brush around the stone, underneath the setting, and along the band using a soft, old toothbrush. Rinse thoroughly and pat dry with a soft cloth.
For a deeper clean, many jewelry lovers choose to use an ultrasonic cleaner (such as this one or this one). These small machines use vibrations to loosen dirt and residue from hard-to-reach areas beneath the stone. If you use one, follow the manufacturer’s instructions carefully and avoid using with very soft gemstones. A final rinse in very hot water can help dissolve any remaining residue and leave your ring looking refreshed and radiant.
Regular Maintenance
Regular maintenance is just as important as cleaning. We recommend having your engagement ring professionally inspected at least once a year. Prongs and settings naturally experience wear over time, especially on rings worn every day. An annual inspection allows a jeweler to identify any loose stones or worn prongs before they become a larger issue.
Different gemstones also require slightly different care. Diamonds are the hardest gemstones and are exceptionally durable for daily wear. However, even diamonds can chip if they receive a sharp impact in the right place.
Sapphires are also an excellent choice for bespoke jewelry. We love setting them in alternative engagement rings both for their beauty and durability. While they rank just below diamonds in hardness, they still benefit from a little extra care during activities that involve heavy lifting, sports or other high-impact tasks. We recommend taking your rings off when going to the gym, rock climbing or gardening.
Finally, don’t overlook the importance of proper sizing. A ring that is too loose can spin on the finger or even slip off unnoticed. A ring that is too tight can be uncomfortable and difficult to remove. If your ring no longer fits comfortably due to seasonal changes, weight fluctuations, pregnancy, or lifestyle changes, resizing can often restore both comfort and security.
With regular cleaning, annual inspections, and a properly fitted ring, your engagement ring will continue to shine beautifully for years to come. A little care goes a long way in protecting not only the beauty of your ring, but also the memories and meaning it carries.
