Peridot is the birthstone of August

Anouk Jewelry continues our series of birthstone posts. And for August we’re excited to focus on the lovely Peridot. The peridot gemstone (derriving from the arabic “faridat”, meaning gem) is one of the few stones that only come in one colour – green. Peridot’s colour ranges from light lime to deep olive, depending on the concentration of iron in the composite.

This custom version of Anouk Jewelry’s Three Leaf Solitaire ring features a round peridot. We use ethically sourced gemstones and textured gold in all of our organic designs.

Peridot’s hardness measures only 6.5 – 7 on the Mohs hardness scale. This means, that it can easily scratch or chip. Therefore, peridots are best suited for jewelry such as unique necklaces or one of a kind earrings, like the pair below. If you love the idea of a custom engagement ring featuring a peridot, you should be mindful wearing one on a daily basis.

Peridots are the opposite of diamonds in terms of hardness – diamonds measure 9.5-10 on the Mohs hardness scale. However, much like the diamonds they are formed in the upped mantle of the Earth, about 20-55 miles deep. They come to surface following a volcanic or tectonic activity. In Hawaii, peridots may even be found on the surface of the beaches! Peridots have also been found in meteorites, which means – they exist outside of our solar system!

Throughout history, the ancient Egyptians loved using peridot in royal jewelry, calling it the Gem of the Sun. The Romans adored peridot as well, calling it the Emerald of the Evening. In fact, over the centuries people have confused peridot with the similarly looking emeralds.

The custom engagement ring above is a version of Anouk Jewelry’s Seashore Solitaire. This ring features a round peridot gemstone. It sits against the backdrop of a warmly glowing seashore texture of 14k yellow gold.

When wearing a peridot ring, one should be mindful as this stone isn’t very hardy and may get scratched or chipped. Anouk Jewelry designed the beautiful alternative engagement ring above for a lovely couple. They had a peridot gemstone they wanted to use for their special ring. First we cut the peridot into a pear-shape as requested by the couple. Then, we set it in our signature “hammered” texture gold. Lastly, we secured the pear in a bezel setting. The result is a truly unique ring, as one of a kind as the couple’s love for each other.

Essentially, rubies are a kind of corundum, a hardy mineral second in hardness only to diamonds. Alexandrite is a rare variety of chrysoberyl. It formed deep within the Earth’s crust under high pressure and temperature. Its most enchanting feature is its ability to change color depending on the light source. In daylight, it appears green to bluish-green; under incandescent light, it shifts to red to purplish-red. With a Mohs hardness of 8.5, alexandrite is durable enough for daily wear. It’s not as tough as sapphires or diamonds, so we do advise taking care to prevent scratches. Its unique colour-changing property make alexandrite a symbol of balance and adaptability. Because of their rarity, alexandrites are pricey – but oh so worth it!

Moonstone, a variety of feldspar, is celebrated for its adularescence—a soft, glowing light that seems to emanate from within the stone. Formed when two different types of feldspar crystallize together, moonstone’s shimmering effect is a result of light scattering between the layers. We’ve recently created the four custom necklaces below, for four family members, each set with a moonstone. With a Mohs hardness of 6 to 6.5, moonstone is softer than some other gemstones. Therefore, it is more susceptible to scratches. For that reason, we prefer setting moonstones in our custom earrings or necklaces, instead of rings.

Anouk Jewelry continues the series of tributes to the birthstones. Each month we share the beauty of a different birthstone. We’re starting the new year with a focus on the lovely garnets – January birthstones.

Garnets are beautiful and versatile, most often coming in deep red or dark orange colours. There are also some rare garnets that come in blue and even green! Tsavorites are an emerald-green variety of garnet, and as such are one of the most popular and expensive varieties of this gemstone. People have been using garnets in jewelry since the bronze age. Garnets were also found in inlays in Ancient Egyptian jewelry. Throughout the Middle Ages garnets were set in signet rings that served as talismans for protection, both in battles and against plagues. More recently, the Victorians loved setting garnets in clusters mimicking the pomegranate design.

The ring above is a custom design that honours our client’s birthstone – the garnet. Anouk Jewelry created the ring, inspired by the ancient “trinity” design. Textured white gold ring features two garnets flanking a central diamond. The deep red stones add a sense of drama while the clear diamond soften the look with some sparkle.

Although an ancient favourite, garnets are not very hardy. For that reason, we encourage our clients to be mindful while wearing garnets in a ring. Our Care instructions advise removing jewelry while working out with equipment, gardening, rock climbing or during any impact heavy activity.

Traditionally, only turquoise and lapis lazuli were considered the “original” December birthstones. However in the modern history blue topaz, blue zircon and tanzanite were all added to the list.

The gold necklace above started off as truly a unique, one of a kind custom design. Inspired by the play of the waves, it features seven blue, teal and blue-green stones to mimic the water hues. An oval sapphire is surrounded by tourmalines, aquamarines and a natural blue zircon.

Sometimes, a blue zircon is a great option simply due to its luminous, vibrant blue colour. We fell in love with this design so much, we included it in our Necklace collection and named it, appropriately – the Ocean Neckpiece!

Anouk Jewelry often creates one-of-a-kind necklaces, unique earrings and custom family rings to celebrate our clients’ loved ones. We are honoured to design bespoke jewelry pieces, which incorporate someone’s birth stones. The birthstone of November is considered to be citrine. It is a beautiful yellow gemstone, and over the years we’ve created several pieces featuring it. However, citrines are quite soft, and for this reason it’s best to set them in earrings, or necklaces, where they are safer.

This unique family ring was created using three birthstones of the family: a ruby, a sapphire and a citrine. We used diamonds for the accent stones in this one of a kind white gold ring design. The inspiration for this custom ring was Anouk Jewelry’s Oceanfoam Ring, originally set with sapphires in various blue and teal colours.

Most of Anouk Jewelry one-of-a-kind necklaces, unique earrings and custom family rings are inspired by nature. This ring mimics the spray of the waves, or ocean foam. The design lends itself very well to custom interpretations. Featuring six stones of various sizes, it’s the perfect canvas on which our designer Anat can unleash her creativity!

As mentioned before, citrines are not as durable as sapphires or diamonds. Therefor, when considering setting citrine in jewelry, unique earrings and custom family necklaces may be a great alternative to rings. In the case above, Anouk Jewelry created a pair of bespoke earrings, featuring a ruby and a citrine gemstones. What a unique mismatched pair, totally original and unlike anything else. Inspired by our Three Leaf solitaire design, these studs are also available with a variety of gemstones.

Citrine Alternatives – Diamonds

Having said that, there are other ways of honouring November’s birthstone – citrine. Another great alternative is sourcing a hardier, citrine-coloured gemstone. The familiar deep yellow-orange citrine hue can be found in sapphires or diamonds, which are excellent choices for everyday jewelry.

Speaking of spirituality, it plays an important part in our philosophy. Our Bohemian Halo ring pays homage to the ancient wisdom of the Mandala design. This unique design can be created as a statement diamond Mandala ring, or a Mandala necklace! Mandala shape makes for a wonderful pendant. In the image below there are two such designs. The Mandala medallion pendant features a small 3mm aquamarine in the centre and a halo of diamonds. Four additional, larger diamonds surround the halo in the four “petals” of the Mandala.

The Mandala inspired necklace on the right is also textured 14k yellow gold. The natural blue zircon is shimmering in the centre, in a halo of twelve accent diamonds. Eight larger diamonds surround the halo.

Speaking of necklaces, the image above shows a meaningful way to reuse heirloom jewelry. This custom Mandala pendant features family diamonds in a spiritually significant design. Because the heirloom diamond was quite large, it didn’t require a halo and we set it on its own. Four additional diamonds of different sizes surround the central stone.

Deep Wreath Solitaire is a non-traditional alternative to an engagement ring. In this design, we replace the plain band with a wreath of golden leaves. This nature-inspired leaf ring features ten golden leaves – five on each side – supporting a seafoam sapphire in the centre. Hammered gold sculpted leaves show off the sapphire, providing a warm contrast to the shimmering teal of the seafoam gemstone. Just like dew drops balance on the fresh green, the diamonds are set on the sculpted gold leaves. The sparkling stones echo the shimmer of little dew drops. Sapphires are such versatile stones, and they range in colour from red and yellow all the way to green and blue. Blue-green and teal sapphires are our personal favourites. We love creating custom teal sapphire rings in warm yellow gold. Teal sapphires come in all shapes and sizes, and we’re obsessed! These gemstones offer endless variety.

Above, is our Shimmering Dream ring. This is one of our classic designs. We love this dainty ring’s simple elegance! This hammered gold and teal sapphire ring features ten accent diamonds, set on the band’s shoulders. This design is highly versatile, and can be set with diamonds or other gemstones. The teal sapphire makes this ring effortlessly classic!

As we mentioned previously, the gemstones themselves inspire us to create new designs. Meet Cleo, the gorgeous teal sapphire ring above. We named this design after the Greek goddess of History (and lyre playing). This design is vintage-inspired and speaks to us of elegant decadence of times gone by. It features an oval blue-green Montana sapphire weighing a whole carat. A halo of sixteen accent diamonds (F/G colour, VS-SI clarity) surround the shimmering sapphire. Montana sapphires are mined ethically in the US, making them a very desirable gemstone choice.

And speaking of goddess rings – we are proud to introduce Artemis – the gorgeous teal sapphire ring with carved gold leaf flanking the sapphire. Accent diamonds on the leaves add sparkle to this intricate and one of a kind design! We named Artemis after the greek goddess of nature, wilderness among other things. This teal sapphire ring features an impressive 7x9mm heated teal sapphire, weighing over 3ct! We knew this sapphire required a brand new design to showcase its unique hue, brightness and shimmer!

This is one of our latest wedding band designs, the Seashore Triple Leaf Mans band with our signature hammered gold Seashore texture. And beside it, echoing the three leaf design is our Three Leaf Prong Sapphire solitaire ring. This round teal sapphire ring has it all – the gemstone whispers to us of the ocean, while the three leaf accent is a nod to the natural beauty of trees which inspired the Golden Leaves collection. Anouk Jewelry partnered with Katie Nicole Photography for a romantic West Coast bridal inspiration project. The style shoot featured a stunning Emerging from the Leaves ring, with a large round diamond delicately set in hand sculpted gold leaves, and finished with our signature hammered gold texture. This alternative engagement ring was paired with our Seashore Mens Wedding band, a custom wide version, measuring 8mm in width. Perfect for an individual with big strong hands!

The world around is an inspiration for Anouk Jewelry to create rings that remind us of the beautiful natural world we live in. This Emerging from the Leaves 14k gold solitaire is part of our Golden Leaves collection. As is the case for most of our hammered gold jewelry, this alternative engagement ring is fully customizable and can be set with a gemstone of your choice. Anat of Anouk Jewelry is inspired by the ancient treasures and gold jewelry of antiquity. Hand made, imperfect rings carry the human touches of the artisans who created them, making each piece truly one of a kind.
We believe our hammered gold alternative engagement rings should be unique, just as individual as the bride. Honouring the beauty of the natural world, we created the Raw Diamonds collection. It highlights diamonds in a wide variety of shapes, colours and sizes. In the image below you can see salt and pepper diamonds, roughly cut grey diamonds and raw diamonds. Set in hammered gold rings, these unique stones are a great way celebrate nature and the original state of diamonds. Many of our clients choose salt and pepper diamonds for their engagement rings. Each diamond has its own visible pattern and colour, which makes them unique.

Moissanite is a man-made gemstone. They don’t require mining, which makes them a more environmentally friendly choice for an alternative engagement ring. Moissanites come in a variety of colours and they are very hardy as well. For these reasons moissanites are a great option for a ring you would wear every day.

Many of Anouk Jewelry pieces feature a hammered gold texture. It is inspired by the sandy beaches we love, and hence we called this collection Seashore. Anat does the marking by hand, as she carves each piece in wax and applies finishing touches to every ring. The awakening spring Nature inspired our Golden Leaves collection.

Anouk Jewelry is known for our handmade custom rings, hammered gold jewelry, teal green sapphire solitaires and diamond halo rings. Anouk Jewelry’s designer Anat recently gave an interview to Subkit, discussing her design philosophy and process.

“The treasures of ancient and natural worlds have captivated me since girlhood and are my inspirations for Anouk creations still today. In terms of inspiration, it’s funny as I was never into jewelry before starting making my own. When I studied art history, I saw jewelry from ancient Rome and Greece, and something clicked for me there. I was really fascinated by the ancient treasures. It was the opposite of modern jewelry, as every piece had a personality and character. Moscow-born, Israel-raised, and now Toronto-based, I solder a myriad of modern-day cultures with ancient mythology, crafting custom rings and jewelry a Roman goddess would wear”.

“Recently I realized I’ve created more than a thousand pieces for my clients, rings, necklaces, earrings, etc. Each piece represents a couple starting a life together, a mother celebrating her family by wearing a birthstone ring, or a woman reclaiming her womanhood and freedom after serving others. Each piece of jewelry represents a personal story, an heirloom created with the view of the future. I am honoured to be part of people’s lives and to help them create pieces of legacy and treasures.”

Anat also discussed the challenges of being a her own boss:
“When you are a business owner, you wear all these different hats. You are not only the designer, the producer, the bookkeeper, the marketing director – you are the one in charge. You are the one that’s ultimately responsible for all the good decisions, and also, unfortunately, for all the bad ones as well. Another difficulty is learning to manage your time so that you are effective in all the roles that you take upon yourself.”

When asked for a few words of advice, Anat had this to say to any designer at the start of their creative journey: “Love what you do. Listen to your clients, really listen to them. Always be open to learning and evolving.”

Anouk Jewelry was created because Anat was inspired by the treasures of the ancient cultures. We wanted to design jewelry that echoes the timeless beauty of the hammered gold rings of antiquity. The one-of-a-kind nature of the hand made jewelry reflects our own sensibility. We come to create each piece as if it is meant to be a family heirloom, cherished by generations of wearers. Each gemstone we source, is as unique as the handmade design of the ring it is set in.

The ring below is part of our Golden Leaves collection. Inspired by the natural world around us, it features three sculpted leaves in white hammered gold we are known for. We call this texture “Seashore” as it reminds us of the beaches. Often we set our rings with green, teal or blue sapphires, that recall the vast open spaces of the ocean waters. This particular ring is called Blue Sapphire Leaves Prong Solitaire. It is set with a .88 carat blue sapphire, held in place by four leaf-shaped prongs. A delicate cluster of three gold leaves on the side completes the look.

Custom Diamond Halo and Sea-foam Inspired Aquamarine Rings

If you’ve been following us for a while, you probably know Anat’s favourite colour combination. Many of our signature jewelry is warm yellow gold paired with aquamarines and teal sapphires. The two rings below showcase the harmony of shimmering sea foam coolness and the warm gold hues.

One of our original signature pieces, the Inspiration Well ring features a round aquamarine. It is flanked by two accent diamonds, and set in 14k yellow gold. The treasures of the ancient worlds are endless inspiration for this design.

Speaking of the colour harmony, our Sun and the Moon ring is a perfect example of the pairing of teal and yellow gold. Anat set the oval aquamarine with a partial diamond halo and cast the ring in 14k yellow gold.

Aquamarines are beautiful, but they’re not well suited for everyday wear. For a lasting engagement ring you’ll want a hardier stone. Sapphires are truly majestic and come in all colours! They are almost as durable as diamonds and therefor perfectly suitable for everyday wear. We love creating bespoke engagement rings with these shimmering gemstones.
This one of a kind solitaire design features a rough cut Montana Sapphire. Anat set this stone in a custom 14k yellow gold bezel with little gold nuggets hugging the solitaire.

This alternative engagement ring is cast in 14k rose gold, featuring a rose-cut rustic diamond and surrounded by a halo of small accent sapphires. The combination of rustic diamond and sapphires creates a romantic look and makes a statement! The coloured rustic diamond is sure to invite a lot of compliments.

All of our pieces use gemstones that are responsibly sourced, including diamonds that adhere to Kimberly process. We often use lab grown or man-made diamonds and other gemstones, which bypass the mining process altogether.

The ring below is one of our most beloved designs, the Vintage Rosetta ring. This is an incredibly versatile design that can be altered and customized to suit many styles (and budgets). Choosing a central stone would be the first step – are you a diamond, a sapphire, or a moissanite lover? Do you prefer yellow gold? Do you wear mostly white gold jewelry? Or do you fancy rose gold, set with a peach gemstone? This design is only limited by your imagination!

As a nature lover, Anouk Jewelry designer, Anat, is frequently inspired by the textures and shapes found in nature. One of our newest collections, the Golden Leaves collection, features many delicate rings inspired by the renewal of spring. This following ring is the Triple Leaf Prong solitaire. It features a central three-quarter carat teal sapphire, held up by four petals, and offset by three golden leaves.

As with the Vintage Rosetta, this design welcomes variations. Closely resembling the prong solitaire, this design has the central stone set in a bezel. It’s available in white and yellow gold, set with diamonds, sapphires, or any other gemstone of your choice.

The Triple Leaf Solitaire is one of Anouk Jewelry‘s staples of alternative engagement rings. This ring is one of our Golden Leaves collection, which honours the Natural world, which we are all a part of. This unique engagement ring design is inspired by nature and features a single gemstone set in a bezel (or supported by prongs), and three gold leaves sculpted next to it.

True to its tagline, “A Touch of Spring Time, Wherever You Are” this collection celebrates the Spring. The awakening natural world brings with it a sense of renewed energy and growth. Many couples choose to get engaged in the spring, feeling inspired by the optimism of the fresh new world around.
